Choosing clips for slow motion

Slow motion stretches the frames you already have. A clip with more frames per second has more to stretch, so it stays smoother when slowed down. As a general practice, record at 60fps or higher if your phone allows it, and pick clips with clear movement: a turn, a jump, hair or water moving.

Keep each clip at least as long as the slot it fills. Very short clips get stretched further and look choppier.

CapCut's App Store listing names smooth slow motion as a feature. The exact menu path above comes from reports and can change between app versions.

  2. 2Tap Speed.
  3. 3Choose Normal to set a fixed speed below 1x, or Curve to ramp speed up and down on the beat.
  4. 4Turn on Smooth slow-mo if your version shows it.
  5. 5Preview, then export.

Fixing choppy slow motion

  • Use footage recorded at a higher frame rate.
  • Turn on Smooth slow-mo, which generates in-between frames.
  • Slow the clip less. The further you slow it, the more frames CapCut has to fill in.
  • Export at 60fps if your source is 60fps. Desktop exports go up to 60fps on free and Pro plans.

Slow-motion b-roll without filming it
